Burglary - Residential - Watling Street |

Dear Resident,
On 04/08/2026 a burglary took place on Watling Street close to the Wagon & Horses pub (Not the victim)
At approximately 1948hrs on 04/08/2026 police received a report that a group of approximately five to six masked males had arrived at Watling Street, Elstree in a large silver van and forced entry to the property whilst armed with weapons. During subsequent enquiries it was established that the offenders had also targeted a separate residential outbuilding located immediately outside the main address. Officers attending the scene established that the offenders had moved between the main dwelling and the outbuilding during the course of the incident. Information obtained from witnesses and CCTV enquiries indicates that the offenders gained entry to the outbuilding as part of a coordinated attack on the location before making off from the scene. Occupants reported seeing males running through the area and crossing neighbouring land shortly after the alarm was raised. The offenders were described as wearing masks and dark clothing, with subsequent review of footage indicating that several were carrying weapons believed to be machetes. A large scale police response was initiated involving local patrols, CID, NPAS and police search teams. Extensive searches of surrounding fields and land were conducted. During those searches officers recovered three machetes believed to be potentially linked to the incident.

Tips to prevent burglary:
Check downstairs windows and doors are securely locked before you leave or go to bed. Secure UPVC doors by lifting the handle and locking it to engage the security features. Don’t leave keys, phones or other valuables on windowsills or in any other visible place. Securely lock rear gates, sheds and garages. Keep tools and ladders locked away, as they could be used to break into your home. Use laminate glass where possible for any rear doors or windows. If this is not practicable, consider the use of security film over existing windows. Use a “Fake TV” or timer switches on lamps to give the impression someone is at home. Consider using a doorbell camera, interior camera, or a monitored burglar alarm. Consider adding trellis to any side or rear boundaries to add extra height up to a maximum of 2 metres.
